Owning A Tercan Collie

I feel that the goal of breeding dogs should be to improve the physical and mental characteristics of the breed through knowledgeable selection while incorporating breed specific health clearances and testing.  There are dozens of tests that can be run for the Collie or any other breed and not all of the disorders impact quality of life. Some tests focus on problems that have very low incidence while others should be considered for all breeding stock.  Not all breeders share the same ideas when it comes to health clearances so it will be up to you to decide what criteria are most important when adding a Collie to your family.  For a recap of health clearances performed on Tercan Collies please visit here.

I do not have puppies very often and breed only for myself to continue the family of Collies I believe will improve the future of the breed.  Collies that may not meet all of my criteria are placed with the best family matches possible for loving and permanent homes. I would love to place Collies with all the qualified families that contact me but raising puppies is a lot of work when done conscientiously. Breedings are never done just to generate sales or fulfill demand.  Tercan Collies are not kennel raised and will expect to be a part of your family.

Tercan Companion Collies – Puppies or adults that are available as companions receive the same care and attention as those destined for the show and performance rings.  This means they are familiar with grooming, traveling, and other dogs and people (varies by age of the Collie).  All of the same medical care, food, and love applies to all puppies.

Tercan Show/Performance Collies - Puppies or adults that are available for show and/or performance homes are raised as companions first, show dogs second.  Conformation show prospects are placed based on whether they deserve to finish and stand as a quality example of the breed. Not all Champions are created equal and while not every Collie may have the opportunity to shine in the ring, I want to produce a Collie that truly deserves the title.

What paperwork is included with the purchase?

Whether you choose a companion or show/performance prospect, each Tercan Collie comes with return options for the lifetime of the dog as well as health guarantees.   Contracts of sale apply to all Tercan Collies regardless of age. The contract is intended to support the puppy, the buyer, and the breeder.  Consider your contract to be your Collie’s “warranty card” for the future.
Other records that may be included with the placement of a Tercan Collie:

•Copies of all Health Screening of the parents/grandparents
•Complete vaccination and worming records
•Complete medical history of the dog for sale
•Copies of any titles or performance certificates
•Photos of siblings/parents/grandparents/growth progression
•Suggested feeding/treats guide
•Breed specific background and health information

In addition to your sales contract conditions, companion or show prospect Collies are eligible for Title Rewards so you earn money back for successfully completing AKC and Collie Club of America titles. I love to see Collies in performance and believe the relationship between owners and their dogs benefit with the teamwork required for performance and conformation titles.

Whether your Collie is destined for the show ring or the couch, thousands of dedicated breeders have worked for over a hundred years to protect and improve the breed. It is a privilege and an honor to continue the work and it should not be taken lightly. I will always be available to answer any questions or provide referrals for anyone who requests more information no matter where you purchased your Collie from.

Do you require special food or supplements as a requirement of purchase?

You are not required to buy any specific dog food as a result of buying one of my dogs. This statement may seem odd but I have seen some breeders requiring purchase of a specific dog food brand (or supplement) as a condition of buying a puppy and getting a health guarantee. This may seem like a reasonable request on the surface but if you step back and look at this requirement, you are being asked to buy a product that provides kick backs to the breeder every time you order via their ID Number or code (you become their ‘downline’). While the food itself may be perfectly fine, do you want to lock yourself into a situation where you have no flexibility in choosing a diet you deem is best for your dog?

I am not saying that breeders won’t have recommended food…I know I certainly have my favorites. But I don’t make buying a certain line of food a REQUIREMENT to receive a health guarantee. If you like the food I feed, great. If not, I will still support the dog (and you!) with a health guarantee anyway.
